HPV is the abbreviation of Human Papilloma Virus, so known under the term Papillomavirus. In the majority of the cases, the HPV is transmitted by sexual contact, and it is estimated that HPV is the principal infection sexually transmissible (STI) in the United States, UK and Australia. The virus is transmitted by direct skin to skin contact of the pubic areas, penis, scrotum, vagina, vulva, anus or another part of the body of an infected person. The HPV is not transmitted by blood.

While the majority of the nearly 200 known types of HPV cause no symptoms in most people, common HPV types can cause genital warts (or Condylomata acuminata, venereal warts, anal warts and anogenital warts), while other HPV's can, in a minority of cases, lead to cancers of the cervix, vulva, vagina, and anus in women or cancers of the anus and penis in men.

Laboratory studies have shown that Carrageen are extremely potent inhibitors of HPV infection in vitro and in animal challenge models. Clinical trial results announced at the 2010 International Papillomavirus Conference held in Montreal, Canada indicate that a carrageen-based personal lubricant are effective for preventing HPV infection in women. The clinical results suggest that use of Carrageen-based personal lubricant products, such as Divine No 9, BIOglide Safe or Oceanus Carrageen may be effective for preventing HPV infection.
